What is SmoothPeelTM laser resurfacing and is it for me?
Laser skin resurfacing is one of the leading cosmetic procedures in the United States. The SmoothPeelTM laser is a skin exfoliation treatment designed to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as improve skin tone and texture. In addition, the laser causes a favorable heating of the skin's underlying supportive tissue (collagen) which results in a mild tightening effect. The SmoothPeelTM laser treatment has been used successfully to treat a wide range of skin conditions including:
- Wrinkles & aging skin
- Sun damaged skin
- Uneven skin tones and skin textures

What is the difference between SmoothPeelTM laser resurfacing and other resurfacing techniques such as microdermabrasion and chemical peels?
Unlike other resurfacing methods, the SmoothPeelTM laser not only exfoliates the surface of the skin, but it also stimulates collagen growth, thereby improving skin elasticity. Microdermabrasion and chemical peel treatments exfoliate an average thickness of 1-3 microns of damaged skin cells per session. The SmoothPeelTM laser can exfoliate up to 50 microns of damaged skin cells in a single treatment resulting in superior and long-lasting cosmetic results. The SmoothPeelTM laser removes a precise amount of skin with each pass and offers adjustable energy levels for adjustable results. Treatments are customized to meet individual client needs and expectations.
How much does a SmoothPeelTM laser treatment cost?
Prices vary depending on the depth of the peel (light, medium and deep) and on the number of area(s) being treated. A treatment of the face and neck ranges from $199-$429 per session. All consultations are FREE.
What type of laser is the SmoothPeelTM?
The Candela SmoothPeelTM is an Erbium: YAG laser with a treatment wavelength of 2940 nanometers. This particular wavelength of light is very attracted to water molecules and because the surface of the skin has a high water content, the SmoothPeelTM laser is excellent for exfoliating the uppermost layers of dead or damaged skin cells in a precise and controlled manner.
What can I expect from a SmoothPeelTM laser treatment?
A laser treatment is relatively comfortable and usually does not require any 'numbing' cream. SmoothPeel® laser treatments vary in intensity and depend largely on a client's needs and expectations. Light, medium and deep laser peels are available. Generally speaking, the deeper the laser peel, the more visible the after-effects. Most clients can resume normal daily activities immediately following their SmoothPeelTM laser treatment.

A client undergoing a laser peel should expect the following:
- Redness or 'pinkening' of the skin in the treatment area. This may last from just a few days up to two weeks depending on the peel depth. Make-up may be used post-treatment.
- Mild to moderate skin flaking / peeling which usually begins on days 2-4 post-treatment and may last for a week or more depending on the peel depth
- A sensation of skin warmth or 'sun-burnt' feeling may last for up to 48 hours post-treatment.
- Deeper peels may result in temporary scabbing or crusting in some areas. Usually resolves in 10-14 days.
Are there side effects associated with the SmoothPeelTM laser treatment?
SmoothPeel™ laser resurfacing is a safe procedure and risk of permanent side effects are minimal. Erythema (redness) and flaking of the skin are expected after any peeling procedure and make-up may be applied to the treated area. Other risks, although uncommon, may include:
- Milia formation
- Acne exacerbation
- Dermatitis
- Hyperpigmentation
- Hypopigmentation
- Infection
- Scarring
- Ectropion formation
- Permanent side effects are rare
Who is NOT a candidate for SmoothPeel™ laser resurfacing?
- Clients who have used the acne medication Isotretinoin in the last 6 months **Also known as: Accutane, Amnesteem, Claravis, Isotane, Sotret, Roaccutane, Isotrex, Isotrexin.
- Clients with a history of abnormal scarring (keloids).
- Clients with active skin infections.
- Clients with history of facial cancers (unresolved) or recent history of facial radiation treatments.
Pre-Peel Suggestions
- If you have a history of cold sores, prophylactic use of oral antiviral agents is recommended (e.g. Valtrex, Famciclovir, Acyclovir, Valacyclovir) for one day prior to treatment and up to seven days after is recommended to reduce the risk of outbreaks
- Refrain from use of Vitamin-A creams on the face (Tretinoin-A.K.A: Retin-A, Avage, etc) for 7 days prior to treatment
- Do NOT use at-home microdermabrasion or skin exfoliation products 7 days prior to treatment
- Do NOT tan - indoor tanning bed or sun
Post-Peel Suggestions
- A cold, damp cloth can be used to cool the skin
- Daily sun block use (SPF 25 or higher) is mandatory to prevent post-treatment skin color changes
- Use gentle (non alcohol-containing moisturizers)
- Do NOT use glycolic or exfoliating products for 7-10 days
- Do NOT pick or peel flaking skin as this can cause unnecessary redness (or scarring). Flaking skin can be gently exfoliated using a warm wash cloth.
- Use plenty of 'non-irritating' moisturizer or vaseline (Aquaphor) on your skin for 7-14 days post treatment. This will help keep the after-peeling under control.
SmoothPeelTM is best combined with?
For optimal anti-aging benefits, the SmoothPeelTM treatment is best combined with laser skin tightening. Whereas SmoothPeelTM works from the outside-in, laser skin tightening works from the inside-out, giving the skin a lifted, tighter appearance.
